* Carter must score despite every defense on Earth gearing to stop him, rack up assists and lead a team that has seven players with two years or less of experience. Carter said he likes and welcomes the leadership challenge.

* A kiddie corps can mean excitement, enthusiasm . . . and mistakes. There are a handful of veterans to lead, namely Carter. One of the grizzled leaders will be Devin Harris.

NY judge sentences disgraced NBA ref to 15 months

Donaghy’s lawyer had asked U.S. District Judge Carol Amon to give his client probation, arguing Donaghy is a pathological gambler. Amon, who could have imposed a sentence of 33 months, gave the former ref credit for cooperating with investigators, but scolded him for disgracing the sport.

Though the papers didn’t name the teams involved, only the Los Angeles Lakers-Sacramento Kings series went to seven games during those playoffs. The Lakers went on to win the championship.

DALLAS (AP) -Former slam dunk champion Gerald Green signed a one-year, minimum-salary contract with the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday.

The Mavericks are hoping that pairing Green – who is still only 22 – with Jason Kidd will bring out the best in the former teen prodigy.
